Abstract

Coping with people and social institutions who express both love and hate for you at the same time is a difficult job. For the police officer, however, this task is only a part of the complex and difficult job of dealing with both the ambivalence of others and also his own ambivalent feelings toward them. The police officer’s problem is that he is not simply the object of ambivalent feelings from the public, the department, his family, and fellow police officers. He has comparable feelings of love and hate for them as well.
