Abstract
As student midwives we are encouraged by our lecturers to maximize our learning in the clinical environment by asking questions and discussing practice issues with our mentors. We also learn that it is vital to question our own actions through the reflective process, if we are to develop and improve our practice to provide evidence-based, woman-centred care. Despite my strong belief in these principles I was dismayed to acknowledge, through reflecting on an experience from practice, that I do not question poor practice but remain passive. Through discussion with my peers I understand that I am not alone in being reluctant to question practice; this has led me to consider why this is so and the effect of the employment crisis on the behaviour of students and the future of midwifery.
