Abstract

Anyone attending (parallel) numerical computation conferences recently is likely to have noticed that a decent number of numerical analysts are actually working on software tools for parallel computation, such as languages, interfaces, modeling systems, visualization tools, or other aspects of programming environments. There are several possible explanations for this phenomenon. Among them: 1. There is no interesting research to be done on parallel numerical algorithms themselves. 2. All the interesting questions in parallel numerical computation are computer science issues. 3. The numerical analysts are doing this work because the “real” computer scientists haven’t, or won’t.
