Never before had a sophisticated health-care institution and its team of physicians, nurses, and technicians been given the opportunity and challenge of diagnosing, treating, and recording the diseases which are either peculiar to or frequently encountered in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. Furthermore, as a specialist hospital and referral center, patients with advanced, complicated, and rare diseases are treated with the most modern equipment and by medical personnel with the highest knowledge and skill. With this in mind, the medical staff laid the groundwork for sharing and documenting their proceedings through the publication of a medical journal. The first edition of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital Medical Journal marks the culmination of that ground-work and the initiation of a unique publication. The primary intentions of the King Faisal Specialist Hospital Medical Journal are information, education, and communication not only with our Saudi and Arab colleagues but also the international medical community. This challenging experience gives rise to the question: Why create another professional publication when there are countless international medical journals already on the market? Will not this new journal merely duplicate already available information? We think not. Most journals emphasize a particular facet of medicine. This publication is a multi-speciality journal, offering well-studied papers on every aspect of medicine in the Kingdom. In addition, these papers will be drawn from the Hospital's team of some 140 internationally-trained physicians who have direct access and first-hand knowledge of the spectrum of diseases treated in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East. Some of those diseases include bilharziasis, hydatid disease, wide spectrum of cancers, including cancer of the eyes, esophagus, liver, intestines and bladder, and some conditions rarely seen in the Western world.Specifically, the King Faisal Specialist Hospital Medical Journal contents reflect a comprehensive undertaking of subject reviews, scientific papers, and clinical research papers. It is our means of documenting and sharing the management of diseases found in Saudi Arabia and the Middle East and of abstracting and channeling the rapid and significant advances in medical care.
