Abstract

Classifications of race and ethnicity in pain research are socially-mediated, cultural constructions. This research reviewed studies examining ethnic group differences in experimental pain to characterize how race/ethnicity is categorized and to determine if racial/ethnic group categories are participant or researcher-determined constructions. We conducted a systematic literature review of studies examining ethnic/racial group differences in experimental pain research from 1944-2011using the PubMed bibliographic database.
