Abstract

This article discusses how alternative filtration technologies (AFTs) offer a number of advantages to small systems, the primary one being that they are often simpler to operate than filtration systems found in conventional treatment plants. In recent years, new regulations have been implemented and new AFTs have hit the market. This article looks at how these changes are affecting small water systems. Membrane filtration is discussed as a viable option, along with the absolute necessity of operator training, and the next set of regulation requirements that includes the Long Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR) and the Ground Water Rule (GWR).
