Abstract
A whole-of-society approach extends the whole-of-government approach by placing additional emphasis on the roles of the private sector, civil society, political decision-makers such as parliamentarians, academic and research institutions, professional organizations and the media. It promotes institutional cooperation, coordination and coherence across sectors of government and society broadly for the prevention and control of NCDs. This chapter describes the roles of parliamentarians and legislators, civil society, academic and research institutions and professional organizations in responding to NCD prevention and control. It also describes key issues in developing and sustaining partnerships. The roles of government, the private sector and the media in tackling NCDs are covered in other chapters. The chapter concludes with key issues around developing and sustaining partnerships.
