Abstract

Abstract This chapter discusses the practice of religiomedical healing in the Caribbean. It highlights how healing is a centrifugal force in Caribbean religious practice. In the Caribbean, people of all kinds, regardless of affiliation or status, may employ spiritual healers or religiomedical healing modalities at some point in their lives, especially for African and Indian descendants whose healthcare was largely ignored, as they were considered expendable and replaceable labor. The chapter then provides an overview of case studies of the most prominent religiomedical healing traditions and modalities from around the region. It also explains how Caribbean religious traditions will continue to make important contributions to the health and well-being of Caribbean peoples.
