Abstract

The four sequential miracle stories in Mark 4:35 – 5:43 are structured and linked to enhance the growing description of Jesus’ identity in Mark. They confirm Mark’s view that Jesus is the Holy One of God who acts as God acts. He is re-configuring the people of God around himself to be with him and on his mission under his authority. Together these stories give further support to Richard Bauckham’s view that Mark pictures Jesus as sharing the divine identity of Israel’s God while not transgressing the monotheistic views of the second temple period.
