Abstract

Abstract The technical design of ISDN is motivated by the primary aim of modernizing traditional telephone networks. The use of digital switching and transmission technology within ISDN facilitates the transmission of digital data besides digitized voice. In the past in many countries dedicated data networks have been built up. With reference to the national development within the Federal Republic of Germany the interest of PTTs, manufacturers of telecommunications equipment, private and commercial users concerning ISDN is discussed. It turns out that it is unlikely that ISDNs data transmission capability will replace very quickly existing data transmission networks.
