Abstract

Using Latent Profile Analysis, we investigated the effect of combinations of transformational, transactional and passive leadership on workplace safety. This advances safety leadership research by going beyond linear relationships between individual leadership styles and workplace safety. Leaders exhibit a range of leadership practices across their exchanges with followers. A pattern- oriented perspective explores the existence of systematic combinations of leadership styles and the effectiveness of distinct leader profiles. A stable- moderate leader profile, characterized through moderate transactional and transformational leadership coupled with low passive leadership, was identified as the optimal leader profile for safety performance. Leader adaptability was identified as a predictor of leader profile membership. The findings are novel as they consider constellations of multiple leadership styles, which represents real- life management more closely. The research has practical implications as it provides guidance on developing managers in their entire approach to leadership rather than focusing on isolated leadership practices.
