Abstract

This chapter reviews some of the empirical data on who is currently in psychoanalysis in the Canadian Province of Ontario, according to demographics, previous treatment history, childhood trauma, and DSM-III-R diagnoses. The survey questionnaire asked about analyst demographics and patterns of practice, analysand demographics, previous treatment history and history of childhood traumata, and indications for analysis. While this study was limited by the survey methodology, its findings are consistent with the prevalence of personality disorders in psychoanalytic patients in other studies using structured interviews. The patients in psychoanalysis in Ontario showed a number of indicators of chronicity, including childhood traumata, previous treatment, and Axis II pathology. Ratings of these specific indicators from the Manual of Peer Review for the Ontario population of patients in psychoanalysis will be reported in a future publication, but preliminary data analysis shows that these indicators were adhered to in the overwhelming majority of cases.
