Who is Afraid of University Internet Courses?

Abstract

With the rapid development and implementation of e-learning and Internet-based university courses throughout the academic world, a major question as to the effectiveness and efficiency of the ICT-based courses has arisen. In order to promote effectiveness and efficiency, the Bar-Ilan University School of Education introduced a mandatory Internet-based 'Introduction to Statistics' course for all first-year students. In contrast, the Bar-Ilan University School of Social Work provided all first year social work students with a traditional lecture-based 'Introduction to Statistics' course. The major aim of the present study was to compare the expectations of the education and social work students from their differentially organized 'Introduction to Statistics' courses and to assess their satisfaction after attending one semester in each course. Initial results indicated that the education students had lower expectations from the Internet-based course in comparison to the expectations of the social work students participating in the traditional lecture-based course, mainly because of anxieties and doubts regarding their ability to cope with the Internet-based course. However, as time passed and Internet-based course students gained experience in e-learning, their self-confidence increased and their anxieties and doubts about their ability to cope with the Internet-based course decreased. In addition, in the post-test examination, Internet-based course students' level of satisfaction was similar to that of students who participated in the traditional lecture-based course. Secondary findings indicate that the Internet-based course is more highly cost-effective than the lecture-based course. Qui a peur des cours universitaires sur Internet? Suite aux développements rapides de l'e-formation et des cours universitaires en ligne dans le monde de l'enseignement, une interrogation majeure se pose quant À l'efficacité et au rendement de tels cours basés sur les TIC. Dans le but de rechercher l'efficience, la faculté Bar-Ilan University School of Education a développé un cours en ligne destiné À tous les étudiants de première année et intitulé 'Introduction À la Statistique'. Parallèlement, la Bar-Ilan University School of Social Work a mis sur pied un cours traditionnel, intitulé également 'Introduction À la Statistique'. Le but principal de cette étude était, après un semestre, de comparer l'appréciation et les attentes des étudiants face À leurs cours respectifs. Les premiers résultats ont montré que les étudiants en éducation espéraient moins de leur cours en ligne en comparaison des attentes qu'avaient les étudiants en sciences sociales, face À leur cours dispensé de manière traditionnelle. Cela principalement À cause des anxiétés et des doutes qu'ils avaient quant À leur capacité de se débrouiller face À ce cours en ligne. Cependant, avec le temps et l'expérience acquise en e-formation, les étudiants gagnèrent rapidement en confiance et leurs inqiétudes et doutes diminuèrent sensiblement. De plus, lors du post-test, les étudiants du cours en ligne et leurs camarades des sciences sociales montrèrent une égale confiance et satisfaction vis À vis de leur cours. Par ailleurs, des conclusions secondaires montrent que le cours proposé en ligne présente un meilleur rapport coÛt-efficacité. Angesichts der rasanten Entwicklung und Anwendung von e-learning und Internet unterstützten Universitätskursen in der akademischen Welt, stellt sich die Frage der Effektivität von ICT Kursen. Um die Wirksamkeit und den Nutzeffekt zu erhöhen, hat die Bar-Ilan University School of Education einen auf dem Internet basierenden Pflichtkurs in “Einführung in die Statistik' für alle Lehramtsstudenten im ersten Jahr eingeführt. Im Gegenzug hat die Bar-Ilan University School of Social Work für die Studenten der Sozialkunde im ersten Jahr den traditionellen Vorlesungskurs “Einführung in die Statistik' angeboten. Das Ziel dieser Studie war, die Lernanforderungen der Studenten mit den unterschiedlich konzipierten Kursen über die “Einführung in die Statistik' zu vergleichen und die Zufriedenheit der Studenten nach einem Semester in den jeweiligen Kursen zu überprüfen. Anfängliche Resultate zeigten, dass die Lehramtsstudenten geringere Erwartungen an einen Internet Kurs hatten im Vergleich mit jenen Studenten des traditionellen Kurses; hauptsächlich aus Angst und Zweifel an ihren eigenen Fähigkeiten, mit dem Internetkurs umzugehen. Mit der Zeit jedoch und mit der Erfahrung des e-learning wuchs ihr Selbstvertrauen und ihre ängste im Umgang mit dem Internetkurs nahmen ab. Die Untersuchung nach dem Test zeigte, dass die Zufriedenstellung der Internetkurs Studenten gleichrangig mit der der Studenten des traditionellen Kursangebots waren. Ein Nebeneffekt beweist, dass der auf dem Internet basierende Kurs wesentlich kostengünstiger ist als der traditionelle.
