Abstract

Recently I had the unique experience and pleasure of attending the International Society of Nephrology meeting held in Jerusalem. I was privileged to be asked to give the opening talk for a whole day symposium devoted to "issues" related to the elderly. While my talk focused on the topic of "biology of aging" and how important it is to understand normal aging changes as compared to disease states, the rest of the program addressed specific disease entities noted to occur more commonly during later life. The fact that a whole day was to be devoted to the new emerging field of "geriatric nephrology" in itself tells me that the "elderly" have arrived as an emerging topic within all areas of health care.
