Abstract

Sometime in the next 18 months but probably January 2000, the Ministry of Defence and the British Government will have to decide how they are to replace the second half of the RAF's original Hercules fleet and provide the outsize/heavy airlift needed to underpin the UK's emerging expeditionary capability. Before them will be the choice of three military airlifters: two American on‐the‐ shelf’ transports, sitting one at each end of the capability spectrum, and the European on‐the table’ Future Large Aircraft (FLA) sitting in the middle ground The competition to meet the RAF's requirements is hotting up and undoubtedly the public debate will be marked by claim and counter‐claim by all three prospective prime Contractors. There is much, to play for and the outcome is far from settled.
