Abstract

The camel boy disappeared into the desert. The man with the cross gave our mob good water and strange food and made them sing about his spirit god. It was okay. The rock holes were empty. Blackfellas and whitefellas don't share a long history. The last of the Aborigines came in from the bush around 1987. Consistent interaction began in the early 1930s. Seventeen-year-old cameleer RM Williams, of Australian footwear fame, led missionaries into the Gibson Desert, built a water tank out of mud and moved on after a year. Missionaries began converting people, tried to stop their heathen ways and save the kids. Harsh climate and lack of food and water out bush in the late 1930s forced a lot of people to the mission. Cultural traditions and beliefs - physical, spiritual and emotional survival information - are passed on progressively to boys as they age so they can take over.
