Abstract

We explore to what extent the available observational data of white dwarfs in binary systems agree with theoretical predictions about the white dwarfs produced during a binary evolution. We show that if the observational data are carefully examined and, as in the case of cataclysmic binaries, proper allowance for the most important selection effects is made, the observations are consistent with theoretical predictions at least as far as the mean mass of the white dwarfs is concerned.
