Abstract
The RCN has long championed extending nurses’ prescribing rights to the full formulary, dismissing potential concerns about professional competence by highlighting the requirement of the Code of Professional Conduct (NMC, 2004) for nurses to work within their area of competence. In the recent consultation on non-medical prescribing, it also did not support the proposal for advanced practice status being associated with higher levels of competence and full prescribing rights.
