Abstract
Local anaesthetics block nerve conduction producing loss of pain and sometimes other modes of sensation, sympathetic paralysis with vasodilatation, and in higher concentrations, loss of motor power. Given systemically, local anaesthetics interfere with the conducting tissue of the heart. In some parts of the central nervous system they cause excitation followed by depression, in others depression alone.
