Abstract

When agonists bind to receptors and transduce their message via G proteins, is it the α or the βγ subunits that are the active mediators? The classical view supports the αs in this role, but recently published papers have cast doubt on this view. Lutz Birnbaumer joins in the debate by describing data which is inconsistent with the challenging view, that βγ subunits mediate hormone action.
