Abstract

Industry payments are often critical to the advancement of medical research, given the limited amount and competitive nature of federal grant support. Financial conflicts of interest (COIs) between health care providers and industry have been historically controversial, and now in the 21st century, they are better understood by licensed providers, trainees, and patients (1, 2). Within oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMS), very little evidence exists that describes the nature and distribution of industry payments, as well as how trainees and patients perceive them. The purpose of this study was to determine whether statistically significant relationships exist between COIs and study design, study topic, and trainee contribution in the OMS literature.
