Abstract

We all know that turbulence in the atmosphere makes stars twinkle, but it also severely blurs telescope images. Newton realized this back in 1730, when he wrote in Opticks that “the Air through which we look upon the Stars, is in perpetual Tremor… The only Remedy is a most serene and quiet Air, such as may perhaps be found on the tops of the highest Moun tains above the Grosser Clouds”.
