Abstract

To assess the follow-up action taken by states on the recommendations of the 1969 White House Conference on Food, Nutrition and Health with regard to nutrition education K-12, a survey questionnaire was sent to all 50 states and the District of Columbia. The survey, sponsored by the National Nutrition Education Clearing House, contained questions on five major areas concerning nutrition education programs in schools. Of 42 states responding, 10 have legislated policy concerning nutrition education. Many other states are formulating programs. The survey shows nutrition education is being carried out through a wide range of disciplines and means. In 31 states, someone has a major responsibility for nutrition education within the state. Thirty-one states also indicated minimum requirements for the individual responsible for nutrition education. This article concludes with recommendations for formulating and carrying out school nutrition education programs statewide and qualifications for nutrition education speialists.
