Abstract

Not so long ago, biometric technology was a thing of science fiction. But as costs fell and more innovations became commercially viable, biometric security systems have been rolled out widely, first in areas like defence and law enforcement, then in more day-to-day environments like our workplaces and libraries. Today the technologies are vastly different – but almost ubiquitous: most modern smartphones incorporate at least one form of biometric ID technology, whether fingerprint or facial recognition.
