Abstract

164 children with malignant tumours were treated in the Department of Surgery at Zürich University Children's Hospital from 1960 to 1978. In 27 children metastases were surgically treated with the declared aim to exercise a curative effect if at all possible. In 19 children, lung metastases were surgically removed, excision was performed in six cases of lymph node metastases, and in one child metastatically infested testes were exstirpated. Basing on the authors' own experience and on literature, the article reviews present possibilities of secondary surgery of metastases for the individual groups of tumours, especially Wilms' tumours, osteogenic sarcomata, teratomata of the testes, and carcinomas of the thyroid gland.
