Abstract

In Francisco Goya's ecthing ‘The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters’ [Fig. 1], the sleeper drifts while behind him symbols of darkness gather and attack. Part of the accompanying text of the etching reads ‘Imagination abandoned by reason produces impossible monsters’, meaning that the forces of darkness, ignorance, tyranny and violence rise up when reason and humanity are forgotten.2 In Colombia, reason seems to have been asleep for a good part of the last fifty years. Thus when one talks about the artistic terrain, it is the ‘politica’ geography that is in the foreground. The unrelenting landscape of violence has been a major influence on the physical and psychological life of the last four generations of Colombian artists.
