Abstract

DURING THE ARCHAIC PERIOD the Greeks embarked upon a far-reaching movement to colonize foreign lands, and the significant number of colonization oracles that survive as part of individual foundation traditions suggests that Apollo's oracle at Delphi played an important role in the archaic colonization movement.1 I propose to examine this corpus of colonial oracles to show how the Greeks represent to themselves, in the sense that Clifford Geertz has suggested,
