Abstract

The purpose of this article is to provide general considerations for the work up and management of dyspareunia, describe the various causes, provide first line treatment options, and note when surgical management is indicated. We also aim to provide additional resources for management. Recent studies have demonstrated the complex nature of female sexual dysfunction and the multimodal treatment options that are often needed including surgical intervention. Recurrent or persistent discomfort before, during, or after intercourse may occur in approximately 15% of women. The differential diagnosis of dyspareunia is vast. A thorough history and physical exam are imperative for diagnosis and treatment of dyspareunia.
