Abstract

SUMMARY Distance education-a mode of course delivery in which the teacher is geographically separated from the students and in which that separation is mediated by technology-is increasingly used in LIS programs. This paper covers advantages and drawbacks of distance education for cataloging, argues that the possibilities outweigh the disadvantages, summarizes current educational research on distance education, and offers a list of elements that may help educators and students to take full advantage of the possibilities.
