Abstract

Academy of Management Annual Meeting Proceedings includes abstracts of all papers and symposia presented at the annual conference, plus 6-page abridged versions of the “Best Papers” accepted for inclusion in the program (approximately 10%). Papers published in the Proceedings are abridged because presenting papers at their full length could preclude subsequent journal publication. The Role of Hierarchy Steepness and Its ChangeYoungjin KwonYoungjin KwonFox School of Business, Temple U.Published Online:9 Jul 2018https://doi.org/10.5465/AMBPP.2018.11138abstractAboutSections ToolsDownload CitationsAdd to favoritesTrack Citations ShareShare onFacebookTwitterLinkedInRedditEmail AbstractThis study examines the moderating effect of hierarchy steepness on the relationship between membership instability and group effectiveness. Furthermore, it proposes a new construct, ""hierarchy steepness change,"" meaning the extent of change in hierarchy steepness after membership change, and examines the three-way interaction among membership instability, hierarchy steepness, and hierarchy steepness change. The hypotheses were tested using archival data on the 30 National Basketball Association teams across 11 consecutive seasons. Consistent with the first hypothesis, the negative relationship between membership instability and group effectiveness is more pronounced in a group with a steep hierarchy than one with a flat hierarchy. However, in a hierarchically structured group, hierarchy steepness change weakens the negative relationship between membership instability and group effectiveness, whereas in a group with an egalitarian structure, hierarchy steepness change aggravates the relationship.FiguresReferencesRelatedDetails Vol. 2018, No. 1 Permissions Metrics in the past 12 months History Published online 9 July 2018 Published in print 1 August 2018 InformationCopyright of Academy of Management Proceedings is the property of Academy of Management and its content may not be copied or emailed to multiple sites or posted to a listserv without the copyright holder's express written permission.
