Abstract

Victoria Goben teaches social studies at the Hubble Middle School in Wheaton, Illinois. She is currently working toward a Doctor of Arts degree in history at Illinois State University and is a frequent speaker at professional meetings. 7hroughout much of Western civilization the writing of geography, like history itself was considered to be a form of literature rather than a science. Many maps from antiquity through the Renaissance reflected this stance. Victoria Goben has used an ancient Babylonian map of the world to introduce students to a different world view at the start of a U.S. history course. After showing her students what the old map meant, she asked them to use the same style to map their contemporary world. Some of their maps and comments on the assignment follow Ms. Goben s general introduction. The title of this feature came from a candid remark by one seventh-grader. ?Ed.
