Riess is the Bernard Brommel Research Professor, Emeritus, at Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, where he taught for thirty-five years. He is the author of several books, including Sports in Industrial America, 1850–1920, rev. 2nd ed. (2013), The Sport of Kings and the Kings of Crime: Horse Racing, Politics, and Crime in New York, 1865–1913 (2011), Touching Base: Professional Baseball and American Culture in the Progressive Era, rev. ed. (1999), and City Games: The Evolution of American Society and the Rise of Sports (1989). The former editor of the Journal of Sport History, his books have won four Choice Awards, and his research has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
