Abstract

Wheel-rail noise is probably the least tractable problem of railway acoustics. Wheel and rail roughness are both known to be responsible to a substantial degree for the observed effects. When wheels and rails have been made as smooth as possible, there may well be more subtle effects within the contact patch responsible for the still substantial level of noise generated.
