Abstract

This chapter addresses the question “What is PLM?” from several different viewpoints. A definition of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) is given. The scope of PLM is described. The phases of the product lifecycle (ideation, definition, realisation, use and support, retirement and recycling) are introduced. Products must be managed in all phases of the lifecycle to make sure everything works well, and the product makes good money for the company. The PLM Grid, a matrix, is described. The components of the PLM Grid include: products; business processes; product data; PDM systems; other PLM applications; facilities and equipment; methods and techniques; people; management and organisation; objectives and metrics. A description of each component is given. Finally, a definition of a PLM Initiative is given, and the typical main steps and activities of a PLM Initiative are outlined. Viewed from a high level, PLM Initiatives in different companies often have similar main steps. However, viewed from a lower-level, they are usually found to be made up of many different activities.
