Abstract

This chapter examines the empirical literature on what is known and required to have an effective prisoner reentry program. A particular emphasis is placed on a review of the scientific literature regarding prisoner reentry initiatives. The chapter synthesizes a vast body of literature on the prisoner reentry phenomenon and provide to both the academician and correctional professionals ways to understand prisoner reentry. The presentation is placed in the context of what we know about criminal behaviors and how best to address them. This literature is incorporated into the body of the chapter as a way to guide and direct academic colleagues and working correctional personnel on how best to both understand and guide prisoner reentry efforts in the community.
