Abstract
This paper focuses on international staffing issues in large US law firms . The differences in international staffing approaches reflect the differences in the types of expertise the firms are using in achieving their competitive advantage . Lawyers are viewed as the carriers of specific types of expertise . The choice of type of expertise needed in the foreign branches of a particular firm is explained by the firm's age , that reflects the nature of the firm's relationships with the clients. Since the analysis is made at the branch level, some country-specific variables, as well as firm-specific variables, are controlled for.
