Abstract
EVIDENCE-BASED ANSWER Topical and oral nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) marginally improve pain at rest and weight bearing from 5 to 15 points on a 100-point visual analog scale (VAS) (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs). Early functional treatment and immobilization result in similar outcomes for joint stability and return to work or sport (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs). There is no difference between operative and nonoperative treatment for return to sport, instability, long-term pain, or ankle sprain recurrence (SOR: A, meta-analysis of RCTs).
