Abstract

The NHS Cancer Plan (Department of Health, 2000), Improving Outcomes guidance (National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, 2001) and the NHS Modernisation Agency′s 10 High Impact Changes (2004) will all ultimately affect the way future cancer care is delivered. They have been developed to ensure quality assurance of services, allowing for growth and development. Acknowledging that the clinical nurse specialist plays a pivotal role within the cancer team, providing expert knowledge to ensure the delivery of high-quality standards of care, the authors take this opportunity to explore specific areas of the cancer pathway.
