Abstract

Abstract Premodern humans had a very different relationship with knowledge from the one we claim today in the post-Enlightenment world. The ancients believed that knowledge was limited and hard-won. Chapter 2 kicks off the Concepts section of the book by discussing some of the philosophical and psychological foundations of the politics of truth. It includes observations from Norse, Greek, and Enlightenment philosophers (especially David Hume and John Locke), classic American thinkers (especially Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, Walter Lippmann, and John Dewey), and more contemporary scholars like Abraham Maslow and Hilary Putnam. It concludes with a note on the nature and importance of bullshit and the role of Donald Trump.
