Abstract

This study examines the comparability of sociology of aging courses, a core component in many undergraduate multidisciplinary gerontology minor programs. A content analysis of syllabi in the 5th edition of Teaching Sociology of Aging and the Life Course (Harris, 2000) was undertaken to determine the presence of 7 core sociological concepts. Among all sociology syllabi, there is only modest coverage of the 7 core sociological concepts. Further analysis examined differences in content between those courses titled social gerontology and those titled sociology of aging. Chi-square analysis revealed a significant difference in course content between these two course titles.
