Abstract
The cortices of many species of rodents contain unusual groupings of nerve cells called ‘barrels’, each of which is closely associated with a particular whisker. The discovery that barrels are absent when the corresponding whisker follicles are removed at birth has provided a useful situation for studying development and plasticity in the central nervous system.
