Abstract

THE PURPOSE of this article is to give a sum mary and review of selected research and literature from 1920 to 1959 pertaining to the organization and administration of off-campus student teaching as a means of providing professional laboratory experi ences. Four major aspects of this topic will be dis cussed. They are: 1) the development of off-cam pus student teaching, 2) personal characteristics, professional training and duties of directors of stu dent teaching, 3) major practices in conducting the off-cam pus student teaching program, and 4) the nature of professional laboratory experiences pro vided by student teaching.
