Thirteen years earlier, the National Institutes of Health established an epidemiologic cohort study in Framingham, Massachusetts, in partial response to an epidemic of cardiovascular disease. Kannel and colleagues enrolled 5127 adults between the ages of 30 and 62 years who were free of coronary heart disease. During 6 years of follow-up, 186 men and women developed disease.
