Abstract

The photodisintegration of 3He is discussed in the light of the non-relativistic version of the Cabibbo-Radicati sum rule, which amounts to a new decomposition of the standard bremsstrahlung-weighted electric dipole sume rule according to the isobaric spin, I = 1 2 or I = 3 2 , of the final state. Experiment shows that, most remarkably, the sum rule for I = 1 2 is exhausted by the two-body breakup into d + p, to the practical exclusion of three-body states with I = 1 2 . We point out some implications of the sum rules for attempts to calculate the disintegration cross sections.
