Scientific ocean drilling commenced through the initiation of Project Mohole in 1961, about the same time as Apollo moon landing ambitions were first artic ulated
The total amount of igneous oceanic crust recovered represents less than 2% of the material archived in the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP), ODP, and IODP core repositories
We summarize early attempts in the 1960s and current plans to reach the Mohorovičić Discontinuity (Moho) at the lower ocean crust boundary with the upper mantle, and we discuss how scien tific ocean drilling has informed us on the major differences in oceanic crust created in fast and ultra-slow spreading settings
