Abstract

ABSTRACT China will announce Xi Jinping as the new leader of the nation and a new seven-member Politburo in the fall of 2012. This leadership change and political restructuring have profound implications for the world as well as consequences for China's internal economic priorities, social stability, political trajectory, and foreign relations policies. Under the watch of this new “collective leadership,” China may become the wealthiest nation on Earth and achieve global political influence comparable to that of the United States. In anticipation of this historic transition, the author addresses the underlying question in the debate about China's future direction—what kind of leader will Xi Jinping be?
