Abstract

Abstract X-ray diffraction of a natural high-cordierite (indialite) shows reflections not consistent with space group P 6/ mcc , which was previously accepted for high-cordierite. When inspected by polarizing microscopy, this crystal showed sectors and lamellae reminiscent of twinning. Microprobe analyses of crystals from the same specimen indicate about 0.1 K-atoms per formula unit of cordierite. Single crystals of synthetic potassium-bearing high-cordierite were prepared using two different methods. These revealed the same extra reflections. A structure refinement of the synthetic material in a number of space groups and subsequent comparison of R-values showed that there are three possible space-groups for K-bearing high-cordierite, P 6, P [unk] and P 3.
