Abstract

Physical analysis is presented showing that the intriguing effect of sonoluminescence cannot be explained in the framework of classical macroscopic hydrodynamic models. It is stressed that the understanding of sonoluminescence is impossible without invoking a "new" physics which has to include mesoscopic collective quantum effects. The conclusion drawn is that the light emission in sonoluminescence is the first example of collective optical transition experimentally observed three decades before the first laser was built.
