Abstract
Despite its wide spread use for over a century the mechanisms underlying sodium fluorescein staining of the cornea remain controversial. In an effort to resolve this question, the aetiological pathways that might result in the appearance of epithelial staining have recently been laid out and studies begun to establish the contribution of each to the overall clinical picture. This presentation will provide clinicians with an understanding of the potential mechanistic circumstances that might result in staining and go on to review the evidence currently available for each alternative.
