Abstract

ABSTRACT On a brisk autumn evening, the film Get Out by Jordan Peele was screened among mental health professionals, followed by discussion from a psychoanalytic lens. The preparation process began by exploring the impact a woman of color discussant may have upon a conversation among a predominately white audience. The preparation resulted in an internal reflection for the discussant: examining how one’s race, ethnicity, gender, and religion influence one’s ability to feel safe to engage in the freedom of speech.
